Dr. LaSonya Townsend is a dedicated scholar and educator in social work, known for her expertise in cultural humility, healthcare practices, and addressing health disparities among older African Americans. Born and raised in North Carolina, she embarked on her academic journey at North Carolina State University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in social work. Driven by her passion for serving vulnerable populations, she furthered her education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, obtaining her master’s degree in social work. Continuing her pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence, Dr. Townsend earned her Doctor of Social Work degree from Capella University, solidifying her commitment to advancing social work through research and practice. With over 21 years of experience in various roles within the social work sector, including direct service positions with state agencies, community-based nonprofits, and for-profit organizations, she brings a wealth of practical knowledge to her academic endeavors. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Social Work at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ’s College of Business and Professional Studies, Dr. Townsend plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of social work professionals.

Additionally, she serves as an adjunct professor for Indiana Wesleyan University’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, further extending her impact on the broader social work community. Dr. Townsend’s research interests are multifaceted, encompassing themes such as cultural humility in healthcare practices, health literacy, and strategies to reduce health disparities among older African Americans. Her scholarly pursuits also extend to school bullying prevention and intervention, contemplative pedagogy, and metacognitive factors in education. She has received specific training in alternative complementary coping modalities for trauma, reflecting her holistic approach to addressing the diverse needs of individuals and communities. Dr. Townsend has contributed significantly to the field of social work through her publications, including a book chapter focused on increasing the self-efficacy of social work students before entering practice education. She is actively involved in professional organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National Association of Black Social Workers, and the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors, where she collaborates with fellow experts to advance the field and promote social justice. Driven by her belief in the importance of mentorship and paying it forward, Dr. Townsend finds joy in her journey as an educator, researcher, and advocate for social change. Her unwavering commitment to fostering cultural humility, promoting health equity, and empowering future social work professionals exemplifies her dedication to creating a more inclusive and compassionate society.
