Joyner inducted into Sports Wall of Fame

CHARLOTTE, N.C./May 17, 2018Ìý–ÌýOn May 17, 2018, Stephen Joyner Sr. was inducted into the Mecklenburg County Sports Wall of Fame. Mary Foxx Johnson ’77 presented the award to Joyner and helped him unveil his plaque on the wall.

He received the accolade in the Coach/Manager category for his accomplishments as a coach and sports administrator at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ. Joyner, who serves as JCSU’s head men’s basketball coach and director of athletics, was one of six local sports figures inducted as the Class of 2018. He is the winningest basketball coach in JCSU history and the winningest active coach in the CIAA.

The Sports Wall Of Fame, located at Revolution Park Sports Academy, serves to honor outstanding Mecklenburg County athletes, coaches, and teams who have contributed significantly either to the development of athletes or to the excellence of sports programs in our area or brought national and/or international recognition to Mecklenburg County. The Sports Wall of Fame is a project of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.

Joyner’s plaque on the Sports Wall of Fame denotes the following accomplishments:

  • 2005 – Present: JCSU Director of Athletics
  • 2018Ìý Winningest Men’s Basketball Coach in JCSU History & CIAA Winningest Active Coach, 10 CIAA Division Titles
  • JCSU Record 540-346 (Men) & 622-418 (Men & Women) as of 2/27/2018
  • 2015Ìý Joined Mike Kryzyzewski, Roy Williams and Larry Hunter as only coaches in NC with 500 or more career wins
  • 2014Ìý John B. McLendon Jr. CIAA Hall of Fame Inductee
  • 2009, 2008, 2001: Coached JCSU to CIAA Tournament Championships
  • 2001, 1997, 1992: CIAA Coach of the Year
  • 2001 Coached JCSU to NCAA Elite Eight Tournament Finish & #10 Ranking.
  • 2001 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year

For the second consecutive year, Duke Energy Corporation hosted a comprehensive Career Development & Professionalism WorkshopÌýaimed at empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in today’s competitive job market.Ìý The event took place on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the James B. Duke Library where Duke Energy provided breakfast, lunch, and numerous giveaways. The POWER UP Bootcamp attracted a diverse group of more than 33 undergraduate students from various majors who were eager to enhance their career readiness and skills as well as develop other essential professional competencies.
