Yancy Hall was transformed with student exhibits celebrating Black culture, history and pride as a part of the 29th annual National African American Read-In Celebration on Feb. 20.Ìý

The national event was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in an effort to make literacy an important part of Black History Month.Ìý

Vespers a reunion of sound

°ÅÀÖÊÓƵ’s annual Christmas Vespers service was a grand success Dec. 2, 2018. This year’s Vespers were even more anticipated than usual, as the program featured the combined voices of the JCSU Concert Choir and the newly organized JCSU Alumni Choir, as well as more community partnership.

On Nov. 11, 2018 students gave of their time and energy for Veterans Day with the Message in a Bottle campaign. More than 50 students showed up at the New Science Center to write messages of encouragement and support to local active-duty veterans. Landry Frison ’19, an active duty South Carolina National Guard, and Sameerah Williams ’19, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps,Ìýalso sat on a panel with members of the Coast Guard who came to speak to students about scholarship monies and opportunities for officer training school.

Dance dreams take stage at Open Streets 704 Fest

The JCSU Repertory Dance Company performed Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 at the Open Streets 704 Festival. Powered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the event opened a length of city streets for the purpose of encouraging more biking, walking, and exploring with neighbors. The community-building event attracted thousands to Charlotte’s West Side, near JCSU’s campus.

Medical intern sees breakthrough in the lab

Taneva Bush ’19 is steadily progressing on her goals to become a doctor. She took an intensive 10-week internship in Summer 2018, as part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. It was the second time around for Bush, who’d done an initial fellowship last year in the Department of Anesthesia at the hospital’s Research Clinic.Ìý She was of such benefit, the hospital invited her to return.
