Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) announced today an investment of $325,000 toward the ������Ƶ (JCSU) Sustainability Village expansion. The investment will fund the construction of three new buildings and support year-round harvests to benefit West Charlotte communities.��

Dr. Cheryl Curtis was appointed publications board coordinator for the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) on June 1, 2018. Over the course of the three-year appointment, she will serve as the liaison between the editors of all 10 ACPA publications, amplifying the published perspectives of diverse student, faculty and staff researchers.

������Ƶ was recently awarded several new grant awards, which will be used to increase the rigor of student research projects. The National Science Foundation awarded JCSU $114,279 for support of a project entitled “NSF REU Site: Examining the Intersection of Food, Housing, and Healthcare.”

Taneva Bush ’19 is steadily progressing on her goals to become a doctor. She took an intensive 10-week internship in Summer 2018, as part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. It was the second time around for Bush, who’d done an initial fellowship last year in the Department of Anesthesia at the hospital’s Research Clinic.�� She was of such benefit, the hospital invited her to return.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded ������Ƶ $149,466 to fund the development of a minor in data science. The award begins Aug. 1, 2018 and is under the direction of Dr. Felesia Stukes, assistant professor of computer science.

Susan G. Komen Charlotte named Tami Simmons, vice president of Institutional Advancement for ������Ƶ, among the inaugural class of “More than Pink Women,” an exclusive group of eight women who are leaders in the fields of medicine, business, media, science and education. The eight women were selected to represent the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. in her lifetime.

The Rosa Parks Farmers Market kicked off its third market season June 2018, returning with more food options, a bigger location and better hours! Every Tuesday from June through September, community members can visit the market at its new home at 1600 W. Trade St. in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Jameia Booker ’19, a criminology major with a pre-law minor, was chosen to participate in the HBCU Bi-Partisan Congressional Internship program June 4-July 27, 2018.

On June 11, 2018, the James B. Duke Memorial Library at ������Ƶ was awarded a $100,000 grant to be used for a project called “Making Space for Tech @ An HBCU.” The grant will fund the development of an academic Makerspace that will give all users the opportunity to gain proficiency in design and manufacturing technologies, which are becoming more prevalent in the workforce.
